THE PLOT AND CHARACTERS OF YALANCI YARIM
This description is an introduction to the show YALANCI YARIM, for the English-speaking public. I hope you love this wonderful television show as much as I do. Since it is acted by Thespians, you will find the action easy to follow. The characters will grow on you and begin to seem like a family you really know. YALANCI YARIM is a Romeo & Juliet in reverse—as their families meet and become friends, but separately TARIK and NAZ verbally spar with one another. No, perhaps it is more like The Taming Of The Shrew! Laugh and cry along with me—but mostly laugh—at the antics of TARIK and NAZ, and of the families TEKELIOGLU and OZKUL.

TARIK TEKELIOGLU squanders his advanced education to become renowned in Italy as the race-car driver “Alfonso.” “Alfonso” survives a terrible race-car wreck intact, which is widely broadcast on TV. Owner of Tek Bank, HULUSI—TARIK's father--sees the video and is enraged that his son has risked his life and is involved in racing instead of his education. BELGIN is TARIK'S mother, and his sister is FILIZ ["Phyllis' "]. The family NANNY (of both TARIK and his father HULUSI) also raised her own granddaughter, AYSE [Ash-ye], in the TEKELIOGLU home. NANNY and AYSE left the TEKELIOGLU house when it was deemed inappropriate by BELGIN (TARIK's mother) for wealthy TARIK to marry his sweetheart, the lowly AYSE. This was an unhappy and stressful parting, with hard feelings between BELGIN AND NANNY. NANNY and AYSE now live in a humble, 3-story, yellow house. AYSE is still in love with TARIK.

In another family--the OZKULs--daughter NAZ wrecks her car in a street race with friends; one of them is CENK ("Jenk"), who is pursuing NAZ’s interest. Father VAHI—an international business mogul—buys NAZ a new car and eventually decides NAZ needs a chauffeur instead of driving herself. Brother UMIT [Emmett] watches, amused. VAHI has very little success finding a proper chauffeur.

To his parents, TARIK pretends he is coming home from the university, but his parents already know of his deceit and recklessness with his life. Wealthy father HULUSI secretly closes all access to credit cards and finances for TARIK. Childhood friend SADRI ["Sahd-ree"] is with TARIK when he discovers he cannot even leave Turkey by airplane for Italy. TARIK appeals to NANNY ["Anane" in Turkish, 'grandmother'] for help. [Later, NANNY will insist that TARIK make it clear to AYSE that he loves her as his sister, not as a romantic interest; she does not want AYSE’s heart broken again.]

During a family blow-up, HULUSI bans TARIK from the family. TARIK goes to live with NANNY. HULUSI takes TARIK to Court as both retribution and as a protection from his own wild lifestyle. In court, TARIK is ineptly represented by his lifelong friend SADRI. Unfortunately, SADRI works as an attorney at Tek Bank, and he is intimidated in court by his overbearing boss, HULUSI. The Judge sentences TARIK to remain in Turkey (Istanbul), ending his racing career, to take on humble work as a taxi driver (or chauffeur), and to pay back his father in full for his educational expenses.

Later, TARIK complains he has trouble getting work; people think it is a joke that a great TEKELIOGLU needs menial work. He drops his last name—to get a job and to protect his own real name. TARIK’s deceit to his family about his education is only the first of a spiral of many untruths, for which the show is aptly named: YALANCI YARIM. [YALANCI meaning “liar,” and YARiM meaning "my lover" or "my love". So, Yalanci Yarim means something like "My Liar Lover" or "My unfaithful lover/darling".] Eventually, TARIK is hired by VAHI as a chauffeur for NAZ. This is a tremendous show of trust in TARIK, giving over his young, innocent (though spoiled!) daughter to be in a male's care. TARIK, in turn, from that moment forward, seriously accepted VAHI'S daughter NAZ as his charge and responsibility, looking after her best interests and safety. (This was almost a sacred trust.)

NAZ begins a campaign of tricks against Chauffeur TARIK, not only because she wants no chauffeur, but because she is secretly attracted to him and yet she is suspicious of him when he seems to be lying. The plot thickens when TARIK's Italian girlfriend FRANCESKA makes a plea on an international TV news show that she is seeking the illusive “Alfonso” . . . !

NAZ'S "friend MELISA" arrives with ulterior motives toward TARIK, even resorting to deception in order to turn NAZ away from him. MELISA indicates that TARIK is her romancer and has spent time with her in her hotel room (untrue, of course). Additionally, MELISA competes with NAZ to obtain TARIK for her own chauffeur by offering higher salaries than the OZKUL'S are paying. NAZ is jealous of the women in TARIK'S life--AYSE, FRANCESKA, MELISA, even FILIZ (because NAZ does not yet know FILIZ is TARIK's sister), and any other woman that comes along. TARIK is almost as jealous of any men in NAZ's life.

VIEWING TIPS:

HEADPHONES: Your viewing experience will be far more enjoyable if you listen closely to YALANCI YARIM using headphones. It is easier to catch international English words, plus common Turkish words. Who knows--maybe you will learn TURKISH as you watch!

MUSIC: AH! What a pleasure! “TARIK” sings a capella in BARIS’S pitch-perfect, beautiful voice. ALSO . . . note how the background music (so pleasurable) helps in understanding and to transition from one scene to another, one relationship to another, one character to another. This device is truly clever.

The YALANCI YARIM episode you watch may begin or end at a slightly different place than the descriptions below. That is because various recordings of YALANCI YARIM--especially if they are on YouTube--are approximately 8 – 9 minutes long. Times may vary from one video to another.

By far the best quality YALANCI YARIM episodes are from NurNur's YouTube Channel--"yalanciyarim1000."

VOLUME 1

(Please see the Plot and Characters description above.)

VOLUME 2

Episode 1 – NAZ immediately starts her campaign to frustrate Chauffeur TARIK. NAZ’s younger brother UMIT (Emmett) is obsessed with auto-racing and the illustrious “Alfonso.” Immediately he notes the striking resemblance of TARIK to “Alfonso,” and often calls TARIK “Alfonso!”

Episode 2 – TARIK chauffeurs NAZ to the Conservatory each day where she studies the cello. TARIK is fed up with the full-regalia chauffeur’s uniform, complete with cap, that NAZ makes him wear. In frustration with the situation, TARIK wants to quit, much to NAZ’s delight. When TARIK tells NAZ’s father VAHI he is quitting and why, VAHI proposes a solution at his own considerable expense. (Watch NAZ’s face!) . . . In the TEKELIOGLU family, HULUSI continues to be a woman chaser, making difficulties between himself and wife BELGIN.

Episode 3 – SADRI, ineffective as a lawyer for Tek Bank, is instead a “gopher” for the demanding HULUSI, and continues to kowtow to HULUSI’s every whim.

Episode 4 – At the OZKUL business, VAHI is wooing a group of Japanese businessmen in his office. TARIK is aware that the recent economic shift has adversely affected MR. OZKUL’s business, so he takes it upon himself to do what he can to help VAHI get the new account from the Japanese visitors. TARIK dresses in the finest business suit and walks in on VAHI’s meeting. TARIK knows what the Japanese men are saying because he learned Japanese at his mother’s knee. His mother BELGIN grew up in Japan as daughter of the Turkish Ambassador to Japan, and she shared her knowledge of the language with little TARIK. Obviously, the businessmen do not know TARIK understands Japanese. They do have a Turkish translator with them. So . . . in the middle of the meeting, TARIK whispers into VAHI’s ear—knowing the translator can also hear—about a successful account they have secured, impressing the Japanese entourage sitting in front of them, and also securing their account. (Now VAHI will need to get financial backing.) . . . In the TEKELIOGLU family, BELGIN makes an unprecedented visit to NANNY’S house. She announces herself briefly by telling NANNY ‘not to worry, I won’t come in. I just want to wait for TARIK.’ She and NANNY still are at odds because of the family break when TARIK and AYSE wanted to marry as teenagers. . . . BELGIN waits on the porch.

Episode 5The two families meet: VAHI must get backing for his new Japanese business. TARIK tells VAHI that he knew the former chauffeur of Tek Bank’s owner HULUSI and knows all his personal likes and dislikes, including music, singers, art, foods, etc. He even says that HULUSI has a son who has grown to be wayward, wasted the family’s money, and has been kicked out of the family. TARIK encourages VAHI to tell that he had this same experience with his son (although not true, of course). [This information will figure into the story later!] The idea of all this is that VAHI can please HULUSI by their “similarities,” thus appealing to the vain HULUSI, and acquiring the financial backing he needs. TARIK even purchases a fancy box of the sweet dessert baklava for VAHI to give HULUSI (his favorite). VAHI is embarrassed by this box of goodies for a business associate, so he hands them to the housekeeper . . . This whole ruse pleases HULUSI’S vain pride, and the relationship is off to a good start. Financial backing for VAHI is secured.

Episode 6 – At the OZKUL'S: The gardener and the cook continue to vie for the attentions of the housekeeper. Eventually this situation escalates to the point of sabotage . . . and the housekeeper becomes very ill.

Episode 7 – Occasionally people refer to TARIK as “Alfonso,” but most do not actually believe that he is. NAZ tries to get TARIK caught street-racing with CENK--by setting this up with CENK--then having her father VAHI waiting at the point on the street where they would come racing through. Again, her idea is to get TARIK fired. CENK incites TARIK to this situation by sarcastically referring to him “Alfonso.” The plan backfires.

Episode 8 – NAZ sees TARIK hugging FILIZ (his sister, but NAZ does not know that), and she becomes jealous. . . . Widower VAHI often talks to the photo of his deceased wife. . . . AYSE comes into the picture again.
